Optical Illusions

Optical illusion in water bodies- Aquatic optical illusions

Optical illusions may also appear in water and the most commonly experienced optical illusions are seen near water bodies. The evening lights or the sudden sparks during sunset over vast water bodies are all due to certain optical illusions. Such illusions baffle us and mystify us at times. The moon is also seen as a reflection on the water bodies and lovers enjoy such nights. Hence one can always say that the optical illusory world has not always been unpleasant with us but it ha also given us certain pleasures.

Children often wonder about certain optical illusions and they might ask their adults about such illusions. You take a bucket of water and put your hand inside it; your hand seems shorter than it really is. This is strange but this is not actually some kind of magic; this is plain simple physics. The light rays enter the water body and they are also reflected back according. During this back a substantial amount of light is also refracted which gives rise to such aberrations. A lens can cause optical aberrations. Concave and convex lenses cause various optical aberrations and illusions. Many fairs organized for children are full of stall having such optical illusions. Children see strange things in them and yet they find them funny. It is just the arrangement of lens which makes all the difference and a simple arrangement of lens can cause a lot of variation to the eye. The variation would be in the form of illusions which would meet our eye and hence we can also conclude that optical aberrations or illusions are a property of our eye. Our eye is genetically programmed to view different things differently and our entire perception of vision depends on the behavior of the light rays falling on our retina. Our retina is highly susceptible to sudden changes in light cones and such variations force the optical illusions to influence us accordingly.

Bending of light is the reason for all optical illusions in water. Various objects look distorted and various objects look misshaped due the same reason- bending of light adds to these special effects. Special effects can also be brought about by optical illusions using this property of light. Hence it is one property of water which can serve a dual purpose; it can help us as well as confuse us. In some rare physiological conditions it is seen that a person who is deprived of sleep would have all sorts of hallucinations. Such hallucinations are caused due to excess fatigue and inability of the central nervous system to go into a state of rest. Acute stress may lead to optical illusions and at the same time the persistence of this problem might lead to acute psychological disorders.

One should never confuse these two types of optical illusions since they are completely different from one another. One is a phenomenon of physics and another is a phenomenon of psychology and often there might be a confusion regarding these two, since the concept of optical illusion is common. Rail tracks might seem converging at times; the very reason is that our optical sense often plays strange tricks with us. These strange tricks often force the tracks to look converging after a short distance. In particular we might be able to tell the tracks separately but they appear to converge. In reality they are still running parallel to each other. Optical illusions can also be used for the purpose of relaxation; relaxation is very necessary in day to day life and any hectic schedule needs to be followed with relaxation. Hence it is important that people find newer ways of relaxation. 3-D effects and optical illusion games can also be used for relaxation since this would create soothing effects in the eyes of the viewers.
