Optical Illusions

Optical illusion of a different kind- hollow face optical illusion

Hollow face masks are pretty common and many of you might have seen hollow faced masks. Such hollow masks are a real life example of optical illusion. Get hold of a hollow faced mask or else get hold of a colored one. It hardly makes any difference since the hollow mask without any color would create the same optical illusions as that of the colored ones. Hence the most important subject of attention would be the optical illusory effects rather than the object which is creating it. This is a particular example of optical illusion which is most prevalent in detailed objects having a 3 dimensional look. The 3-D looking objects have a 2-D shape since the comparison of the dimension would make breadth completely insignificant. Hence this illusory effect is created in front of our eyes.

There are various ways to observe this since the hollow face would represent various images in front of the reader’s eyes. One should consider a particular frame or axis along which it would be completely rotated and the rotation would yield an effect which would be completely illusory. Just like a tennis ball would fox a person, once it is completely spun at high speeds; a hollow mask would do the same. It would fox a normal eye in a big way. The perception would be equally strange since the hollow mask would give the impression of a two sided mask. This might sound strange but this is true since any visual affect created with this effect would yield such beautiful illusions. This might also be a bit frightening for some people since such illusions create doubts in the mind.

The light source plays another important role in this aspect. Light sources determine the type of illusions we would perceive and the position of the light source is very vital. The position of the light source would determine the exact nature of the illusion which would be visible in front of us. The exact illusions differ in most cases and in this case it is just the light source and our visual angles which are making all the difference. The difference is marked and at a distance it is really difficult to distinguish between a hollow face and a full torso. It would be very difficult to make out since the virtually 2-D object is giving the expression of a completely 3 dimensional effect. Various interpretations would suggest that the mask is hollow; others would disagree at the first appearance. They would suggest the mask is full; hence it would be completely skeptical to analyze things from a distance.

Other examples of illusions include those which involve top views and front views. Architectural concepts have been derived from such conceptions since the top view; side view, vertical view and horizontal views are all optical illusions. Optical illusions would result in various innovative concepts ad designs and it may sound strange but this very concept of optical illusions has been utilized by many designers. Such designers have completely revolutionized the way in which we conceptualize style. Hence we can find one aspect of designing which can be associated with optical illusions. . The color changes are used as the tools for bringing about the special effects. Special effects are not effective if they cannot use the subtle movements of the eye, hence this is purely an optical phenomenon. The term fiction is being used since the optical illusions can never be realized physically; it is just a property of light and our eyes too. It is a virtual reality where things seem to be real but in reality they do not exist at all.
